2nd Lt Charles M. Thirlkeld Jr. graduated from high school in Columbia, South Carolina, attended The Citadel for 3 semesters then transferred to Louisiana State University.He joined the Regular Army in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on 4 June 1942, receiving his training at Camp Wood, Texas. He was sent overseas in August 1944.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Grand Failly, France.
