Capt Jeff D. Newman graduated from C. E. Byrd High School in 1936 and attended Centenary College for two years.

He was sent overseas in September 1942, and served about a year in Guadalcanal and other bases in the South Pacific as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator. After completing his missions he returned the the US and served as an instructor for six months. Then he went to England as a bombardier on a B-26 Marauder.

The airplane was hit by enemy fire from enemy fighters in the tail and the rear, destroying the rudder. It was last seen when it glided down to the right of the formation.

Three crew members survived, five men were killed.
