More information
2nd Lt George A. Ludwig Jr. enlisted in Toledo, Ohio, on 6 August 1942.Statement of 1st Lt Jeremiah J. Mahoney:
"I was flying Red leader on mission V-89-5, 23 January 1945. Our flight had successfully bombed targets on the road and upon observing another target some distance down the road, began to strafe. Upon completion of my strafing pass, I turned to observe the extent of damage caused by my guns when I saw Lt George A. Ludwig, Jr., flying Red 2 position, dive on the target. When he had descended to approximately 500, a barrage of light flak was directed at him from the target area. Lt Ludwig was hit almost immediately, evidently in the right gun bay, for his right wing was seen to explode. He then broke to the right and crashed head-on. No chute was seen to open by either myself or by members of my flight, who were directly behind him."
