More information

Pfc Lewis C. Kandler enlisted at Fort Douglas, Utah on 9 March 1942.

The citation of his Bronze Star reads:
"On September 29, 1944 near Arracourt, France, Pvt Kandler manned a 30 caliber gun against enemy infantry while under the direct fire of enemy tanks. Despite the intensity of enemy small arms fire and the approach of tanks, Pvt Kandler remained at this position until the officer in charge ordered his withdrawal. The outstanding courage and calmness, with disregard to his own personal safety reflects great credit upon himself and the military service."

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand Failly, France.
