More information

Pfc Robert L. Simons graduated from Austin High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas.

He enlisted in April 1943 and trained at Fort Francis E. Warren, Wyoming and was transferred to Carnegie Tech for the Army Specialized Training Program.

He was sent overseas in July 1944.

He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously for his action on the day of his death. The citation cited: In order to warn his comrades of a powerful attack, Pfc Simons stood in the street and fired his rifle on an enemy tank which was only one hundred yards from him. Fire from the tank's machine guns killed Pfc Simons but his gallant action alerted his comrades.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.

All his brothers also served during the war.
