Sgt William D. Green graduated from Tech High School in 1941 and was employed by the A&P Stores, Inc. a clerk general office.

He volunteered for the U.S. Army in Fort McPherson Atlanta, Georgia on 23 September 1942 and received training at Toccoa, Georgia, Fort Benning, North Carolina and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He went overseas in the fall of 1943. Before his enlistment into the Army, he enlited in the Merchant Marine.

He was a veteran of the campaigns in Normandy, where he was wounded in action, Holland and Belgium.
