Ira F. Peak was commissioned as second lieutenant upon successfull completion of the officer candidate course at the infantry school at Fort Benning in Georgia. He had been overseas more than a year and in the Army since June, 1943. He attended Butler university and Tulane university in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Indiana University Medical School. He married Jean Boylan Chester on 28 August 1943 at Moore in North Carolina.His father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
2nd Lt Peak was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Order of the Purple Heart. Dr. Peak received a package of souvenirs from young Peak just the day before receiving the telegram from the War Department.
