1st Lt Peter C. Welling enlisted in Chicago, Illinois on 14 March 1941.

The platoon was ordered to make a patrol deep into enemy territory in the vicinity of Blainville, France for the purpose of investigating Meurthe River crossings. On the outskirts of Blainville, they met heavy machine gun and small arms fire. Lt Welling maneuvered his platoon into the most favorable position, but doing so he necessarily exposed himself above the turret of his armored car and was killed by small arms.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Saint James, France.
