1st Lt William J. Hummel was awarded the Bronze Star for distinguishing himself by heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy in France on 17 September 1944.He was wounded when his tank was hit by a German anti-tank gun shell a few seconds after his crew had knocked out a German Tiger tank.
He died of his wounds in the 111th Evacuation Hospital.
