Lawrence B. Carter graduated from Olean High School in 1932.He joined the Regular Army in October 1933 and was discharged in 1936 after the expiration of his term.
He was married to Genevieve Archibald in February 1937.
In 1940, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve and was discharged in 1941. On 3 July 1942 he again reenlisted and was sent to Officers Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kansas where he was commissioned in November of the same year. He was sent overseas in November 1943.
After serving with a Cavalry Reconnaissance unit in France in June 1944, he was transferred to the 7th Armored Division in England.
