1st Lt Joe A. Cotten graduated from Erskine College and was the athletic coach and biology teacher at a school in Fairfax, South Carolina.He enlisted at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on 24 June 1941 and was sent overseas in April 1944.
He was married to Barbara Moffat Grier on 19 December 1942.
He was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Limey, France.
