S/Sgt John W. Popowitz was employed at the American Window Glass Company before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 20 October 1942.

The plane shot down by fighters and crashed in a vineyard near Birkweiler, Germany.

S/Sgt Popowitz had lost a leg during the attack. The pilot helped him to the escape hatch and hleped him to bail out. He had barely enough strength to pull rip.
