More information

1st Lt Donald M. Malmsten states in the Missing Aircrew Report:
"I was Cobweb Red Leader, and when my number three man dropped out, Lt Delnero (Carmeno J.) filled in as Red three. We were strafing locomotives approximately west of Chemnitz. We just pulled up from strafing two locomotives when Lt Delnero called in an ME-109 at seven o'clock to us. It was raining and snowing, and as we turned into the seven o'clock position we saw one aircraft firing on the other and getting strikes, but due to the rain and snow, we couldn't identify one from the other. The aircraft being hit blew up in the air and crashed from about 500 feet, completely demolishing the aircraft. We circled the crash calling Lt. Delnero, but was never able to get him. We then started home after another 360-degree orbit of the crash. The action took place almost directly over Meerane, west of Chemnitz, at about 1300, 21 November 1944."
