More information

2nd Lt Paul W. Karpinko was a clerk before he joined the Regular Army in Washington, District of Columbia on 30 July 1942.

S/Sgt Herbert P. Wright:
I was flying in A/C 42-100364 and saw the following. A/C 42-94951 and A/C 42-95091 were bot hit by flak at approximately the same time. A/C/ 42-95091 had a fire in the bomb-bay and went into a spin and then steep dive. Saw A/C 42-94951 hit and start to go down. At about that time our own ship was hit by flak and I lost track of the two planes that were in trouble. When we straightened out again I saw four chutes but could not positively identify which plane they had emerged from.

1st Lt Malcolm L. Gardner:
Lt. P. W. Karpinko was seen to bail out and then our B-24 while in a flat spin is believed to have separated him from his parachute. German interrogator at Wetzlar Dulag-Luft informed me that Lt P. W. Karpinko’s dog tags were found on a crushed body.
