2nd Lt Eugene G. Ismert Jr. was a mechanic and repairman before he joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Buckley Field, Denver, Colorado on 11 August 1943.

1st Lt Dean H. Cramer:
“After providing escort and dropping chaff, our flight hit the deck to strafe targets of opportunity. At approximately 1330 hours, we attacked a locomotive on the Memmingen-Buchloe railroad line. The flight leader hit and destroyed said locomotive. His wingman, Lt Ismert, intent upon shooting at the same locomotive, flew headlong into the target. He exploded immediately. Position of the crash was 48.03N-10.26E, near Erkheim.”
