More information

William H. Edwards graduated from Ironton High School in 1935. He attended Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (R.O.T.C.). In 1938, he won an appointment to the Military Academy.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the Field Artillery and was assigned to the Air Corps for flight training. He trained as a pursuit pilot at Spence Field in Moultrie, Georgia, and received his wings on 13 December 1942. In August 1944, he was sent overseas.

Per Capt Temple Bowling Jr.:
"After passing south of the target, the squadron broke sharply to the left with the exception of Green flight led by Capt Edwards. This flight was continuing straight ahead on a course of approximately 45 degrees, then starting a gradual turn to the left. When the squadron rejoined, Capt Edwards was missing; the time was approximately 1500 hours. Edwards' plane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire."
