1st Lt Edward E. Donnelly attended high school for two years and was employed at a textile mill before he joined the National Guard in Troy, New York on 15 October 1940.

The regiment was attacking a town called Volksberg. It was strongly held place located on high ground and was difficult to take. The first assault was beaten back. Donnelly was hit by small arms fire and instantly killed while leading this attack.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Hochfelden, France.
