Sgt. Henry W. Carey graduated from Milton Academy in 1939 and Yale University in December 1942.

He enlisted in Manchester, New Hampshire on 10 February 1943 and was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied at Washington University from 23 August 1943 to 21 March 1944. He was sent overseas in September 1944.

On 15 November, he and his platoon sergeant were sent to silence an enemy machine gun on a railway embankment between Emberménil and Leintrey. He was wounded and died in the 54th Field Hospital, that was set up in Lunéville, France, after the wound became infected.

An annual scholarship award was established in his honor at Milton Academy in 1945.
