More information
2nd Lt Everett A. Henderson was a metalworker. He enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio, on 11 February 1941.
The aircraft was part of a unit attacking the railway station of Roosendaal. It was hit in the engine and a wing, which caused a fire and the crash of the airplane.
Statement of 1st Lt James A. Kyle, who was flying in the same group and witnessed the crash:
"On 9 September 1944, I was flying in Daily White three position. Daily White two was flown by Lt Henderson. As we were circling around looking for ground targets, Fairbanks (Daily White Leader) called in one car or a truck at 3 o'clock to us and said something on the R/T about one pass, one ship, or one flight going down on it.
When Fairbanks peeled off, Lt Henderson followed him down and strafed the car. I watched both of them go down and started down myself. Just as I got in range and started to fire, I saw Lt Henderson's ship crash into the ground at about 11 o'clock to me. I stopped firing and, as I leveled off, could see pieces of airplane scattering along the ground. There was no possible way Lt Henderson could have bailed out. This was the last I saw of Lt Henderson and his airplane."
On 18 September 1944, Lt Henderson was first buried in the Russian section of the Catholic community cemetery of Breda.
After disinterment, he was initially buried in a temporary grave at Margraten on 5 July 1945. When this Cemetery became a permanent resting place, the site was rearranged, and Lt Henderson's remains were disinterred. At the time the disposition instructions of his wife were received, all available grave space in the rearranged cemetery had been taken. Therefore, his final interment was accomplished at Ardennes on 3 May 1950.
