2nd Lt David C. Wilk was an architect before he joined the National Guard in Chicago, Illinois on 5 March 1941.The B-17 was damaged by fighters on the bomb run and then received a direct hit from flak in the cockpit and radio room. At about 0840hrs the aircraft exploded in mid-air at 12,000 feet crashed 1,000 yards north of Chapdeuil, southeast of Paris.
Lt Wilk was killed at his position.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Solers, France.
