T/4 William E. Royal attended high school for two years and was a driver before he enlisted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 7 November 1941.He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Solers, France.
He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. The citation was given in commendation of the "skill, resourcefulness and fidelity with which Sergeant Royal performed his duties as cook contributed immeasurably to the health and morale of his organization during the invasion of Western Europe. Sergeant Royal's courage and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon the Army of the United States."
