Biography

In the 1930 census 4-year-old Michael is living with his parents and sister Marie in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. His mother was born in the Irish Free State. Michael’s father died at the age of 37 on 7 December 1932 when he was 7 years old. In the 1940 census 14-year-old Michael was living with his 51-year-old widowed mother and sister Marie 20, in the Bronx. His mother was a housekeeper in a hotel. Marie was a recreation aid for a park playground project.

Michael O’Connell attended high school for two years and worked in a textile factory.
He enlisted in New York City, New York on 5 October 1943.
His cousin John J. Cox is buried at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial of Margraten, the Netherlands.
