Capt Lawson G. Mathews attended college and was a tinsmith, coppersmith and sheet metal worker before he enlisted in Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 18 May 1942.

He was killed in a vehicle accident. He was on his way home to be with his mother, who was very ill and who died on 17 September. He had wired his family that he would be home as soon as possible.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Champigneul, France.

He is remembered at the Magnolia Cemetery in Magnolia, Duplin County, North Carolina.
