Statement from 1st Lt Edward J. Hayes:
"We were on a squadron armed reconnaissance mission around Troyes when several vehicles were called out by Maj Gray. They were on the road running north-northeast of Troyes, about six miles from the town. Lt. Jorgenson, flying my wing as Blue two, followed me through three strafing passes, and on the fourth pass, as I pulled up, I saw his ship mush into the ground and explode. The approximate time of the accident was 1545 hours. There was no flak over the target. He evidently dove too steep and got too low before he started his pull-out."

2nd Lt William J. Jorgenson Jr. was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Champigneul, France.
