Pvt Maurice J. Garbett worked in a defense plant in Philadelphia.

He enlisted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 25 September 1943. He was sent overseas in June 1944 and already served at the Anzio beachhead and other engagements in Italy before his unit was sent to France.

At the time of his death, two of his brothers, U.S. Marine Sergeant John A. Garbett and Seaman 1st Class Thomas A. Garbett, were serving in the Pacific theatre and a third, Sgt Robert Garbett was in Italy after having been wounded wice in combat.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Saint-Juan, France.
