More information
Sgt Jessie B. Choat worked on a farm before he enlisted in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 29 January 1941.He was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For gallantry in action on 11 September 1944, while recovering from a foot injury, Sgt Choat received word that his platoon had lost many noncommissioned officers. Without orders, Sgt Choat proceeded to his platoon, and, finding that both his platoon leader and platoon sergeant were casualties, assumed command and under intense enemy fire reorganized the platoon. He was killed during the action, but his courage and leadership materially aided his company in repelling the attack.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Saint-Juan, France.
