More information
Capt Jay C. Malone was a plumber for Standard Plumbing Company. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps on 17 August 1942.
Statement from Captain Carl V. Ernst:
"Bison Leader dive-strafed the south end of Neuberg A/D from north to south and picked up little flak from the south end. At 1530, he called over the R/T and said, 'will test it again for flak.' This time he made his pass from northeast to southwest, coming low over a wooded area at the north end of the field. He got some strikes on a JU88 and was at about 400 feet when the whole wooded area lit up with flak, and he was hit. The aircraft then turn over, hitting the ground and exploding.
Statement Capt Frederick M. Mead:
"Capt Malone went down on a dive-strafing pass at Neuberg from northeast to southwest, damaging a JU88. At approximately 400 feet he was hit by light fire (20 mm, 50 cal and small arms), tearing his left wing flap and elevator off. I also saw his canopy come off. At that moment he called, 'Bison Leader here, I am hit.' The aircraft then turn over on its back, crashed into the ground and exploded."
