Pfc. Karl E. Sutton attended Woonsocket Junior High School and Staunton Military Academy before entering the service. He also served as scoutmaster.

He enlisted at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 19 April 1944.
He landed with his unit in Le Havre, France in January 1945. He joined the 13th Armored 'Black Cat' Division at Camp Bowie, Texas. In the advance into the Ruhr Valley, Pvt. Sutton was bringing up ammunition in a truck when he was struck down by a sniper.

Camp Sutton, a Boy Scout camp on the shores of Harris Pond, was named in his honor.
