More information

Cpl Martin Schmitt graduated from Jonathan Dayton High School in 1940 and was employed at Singer's Manufacturing Company.
He enlisted in Newark, New Jersey on 25 November 1942. He arrived in France in October, 1944.

Martin Gustav Schmitt arrived with his father, mother and sister on 4 June 1926, they sailed with the SS George Washington, which left from Bremen, Germany and port of arrival was New York.

"Schmidt" Lane in Clark is named after Cpl Schmitt. When his name was selected to be honored with a street shortly after the war, the person who ordered the sign inadvertently misspelled the name. A correction was never made and so to this day the street remains "Schmidt" Lane.
