Pvt Robert L. Janis enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 19 July 1944. He worked on a farm.

He was reported wounded in action on 5 March 1945 in the vicinity of Esch, Germany. For this wound he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
