S/Sgt Howard J. Hibbard attended Benjamin Franklin High School and worked as an airplane mechanic.

He joined the Regular Army at West Point, New York on 20 July 1937 and was sent overseas in January 1945.

His brother, Frank, served in China and his sister, Mary Louise, served in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve in Santa Anna, California.
