More information
Pfc Richard G. Gammans attended the St. Joan of Arc School and later Kokomo High School. He was placed in the 4-F classification in the Selective Service registration, but persisted in his effort to get into the army. He was rejected a second time, because of being underweight. He tried a third time and by stuffing himself with bananas and drinking huge quantities of water he was able to get his weight up enough to pass examination. He finally enlisted on 22 July 1944.
The boat on which he went across was sunk but he was rescued.
He joined B Company near the end or just after the Battle of the Bulge.
His younger brother, Sergeant James E. Gammans, was killed in action in Korea on 18 September 1950.
Nota about his name: On some documents, like in the Kokomo High School yearbook, his name was spelled Gammons.
