T/5 James E. Sheppard volunteered for the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19 November 1942.His tank, #D16, was knocked out by direct fire, killing the entire crew. Three crew members are buried at Henri-Chapelle: Pfc John C. Hutchinson, Pvt Robert E. Hurley and T/5 James E. Sheppard.
