T/5 James E. Sheppard attended high school for two years.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19 November 1942.

His tank No. D16 was knocked out by direct fire, killing the entire crew. Two more crew members are buried at Henri-Chapelle: Pvt Robert E. Hurley and Pfc John C. Hutchinson.
