More information

T/5 Mc Hugh attended the University of Notre Dame as part of the Class of 1943 but left to study photography, his chief vocational interest, at the University of Rochester.

He was assigned to the Motion Picture Division of the Signal Corps. He had been in action since D-Day, recording the war as it happened.

He was with an outfit of the 7th Armored Division which moved into Wallerode to clean out the village. He had dropped his pen while making notes about a photo he had just taken and went back to retrieve it. While he was gone, leading troops came into contact with German snipers. He returned to his position and began photographing again, unaware of the sniper contact. When he stood up from the protection of a farm building and a disabled panzer to get same shots, his buddies yelled at him to get down, but because of his poor hearing he failed to hear their warning. He was shot through the head and killed instantly.
