Pfc Roland O. Hayes enlisted in San Francisco, California on 25 January 1944.He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. The citation cited: For heroic achievement in connection with military operation against the enemy last February. When his company was pinned down by heavy indirect fire, Pfc Hayes boldly moved across the crest of a hill to secure direct targets for his Browning automatic rifle. With no thought for his personal safety, he delivered such effective fire that the resistance was broken and the enemy forced to retreat. His courage and devotion to duty reflect highest credit upon himself and the military service.
