Pfc Bernard J. Van Der Steen was sent overseas in December 1944 or January 1945.Pfc Van Der Steen was initially buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Breuna #1, Germany on 16 April 1945. According to the IDPF his entire body was burned. He was evacuated to Margraten and buried in a temporary grave on 14 July 1945. He was given his final resting place on 21 December 1948.
