More information

Pvt Alex F. Lewandowski was killed by German artillery fire.

His brother 2nd Lt William J. Lewandowski is buried at the American Military Cemetery Ardennes.

Another brother, Sgt Walter M. Lewandowski was killed in action on Guam on 21 July 1944. He is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The oldest brother, Stanley Lewandowski, was in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of Captain in WWII.

Although Mrs. Stella Lewandowski lost three sons, she was refused membership in the Gold Star Mothers of America because she wasn't a citizen. She had been under the impression she had been a US citizen since 1923 but learned she was an alien when she applied for membership in the Lyndhurst Chapter of the Gold Star Mothers. She received her certificate in 1948 in Hackensack, New Jersey and received the Gold Star Mother pin with three stars.

Walenty and Stella Lewandowski were born in Poland.

A monument, featuring a large plaque and three gold stars, can be found in the Lewandowski Park in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Apart from the park there is also a street named after the 3 brothers, the Lewandowski Street.

Also a bridge on the New New Jersey Turnpike in Secaucus, New Jersey is named after the 3 Lewandowski brothers.

The second last picture is the Monument at the "Lewandowski" AmVets Post in Lyndhurst New Jersey.

They are remembered at the Lyndhurst WW2 Memorial at the town hall.
