More information

Statement of the squadron leader: "We had escorted Beaufighters to a convoy off the coast of Norway, and after they hit it, Caboose Squadron went up to Sola, to ground strafe an airdrome. When we hit the airdrome, Lt Fischer was flying on my left wing, and our path over the airdrome was right over the hangars. The flak was like a solid wall and very accurate. Very soon after crossing the airdrome, Lt Fischer called me and told me that he had been hit in the coolant and that he was heading for Sweden. I immediately called back, wished him luck, and gave him the course to Sweden, just in case he had forgotten. This very R/T conversation was repeated twice, and then I heard no more. I never did see him, so I am unable to report how badly he was hit, but from talking to him on the R/T he was in pretty bad trouble. A few minutes later, I called him, but I never contacted him, and this was done several times. All of this took place at about 1510 hours."
