More information
Capt Woodhull was promoted from 1st Lieutenant to Captain in Southern France and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 517th Parachute Infantry as artillery liaison officer. He and his radio man, Herb Jeff, accompanied the Regimental Combat Team on all patrols which were performed 2 or 3 times a week during the 90 days they were on the lines in Southern France. They worked as a team and Woodhull would call in artillery to take care of targets of opportunity, to slow down enemy forces who were coming after the Combat Team when they got too deep into enemy territory, and to destroy targets that were spotted after the Combat Team made it back inside their own lines. After turning the Bulge inside out, the bloodiest combat the Combat Team faced was in Bergstein, Germany. They were given a diversionary attack order (an attack in one direction to fool the enemy when the main attack is coming from another). Woodhull was killed by a burst of machine gun fire in that attack as he was directing artillery fire in support of the attacking troops.A mistake was made on Woodhull´s grave marker. His unit was never part of the 101st Airborne Division. It became part of the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team after Tennessee maneuvers in early 1944 and served with it until 1 March 1945.
