1st Lt Charles S. von Stade enlisted in February 1942. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant at Fort Rile, and after several tours of temporary duty in the United States, was assigned to the 93rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, with which he was sent overseas early in 1945.Von Stade was an excellent horseman. He rode in several Hunt Race meets, and had an 8-goal handicap in polo. In 1941, when he was twenty-one years old, he played in teams that won the National 20-goal, the National Open and the Monty Waterbury Cup championships. In school he won his S.P.S. twice in baseball and twice in hockey. He was known for his beautiful voice.
1st Lt Von Stade was killed when his jeep hit a tellermine.
