Pvt Sonnie J. Rockford attended Manual High and Vocational School in Kansas City, Missouri.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 2 April 1942. He was sent overseas in March, 1943 and served in Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, France and Holland.
