More information
2nd Lt Herman Jemberger graduated from De Witt Clinton High School and attended the Univeristy of Pennsylvania. He enlisted in New York City, New York on 30 October 1942 and was sent to the Officers Candidate School at Fort Sill.
Company H of the 194th Glider Infantry Regiment was acting as reserve company after landing on Landing Zone S along with the 681st Glider Field Artillery Battalion whose guns dealt with the main thrust of the German counterattack with tanks across a large metal bridge where the Issel Canal came off the Issel River. 2nd Lt Herman Lemberger, a forward observer, had been calling in the infantry targets when he saw tanks approaching. He then moved into the open to get a better view and had just managed to send the coordinates for this new threat when a tank shell killed him. His selfless action meant that the attack was broken up and the tanks dispersed. For this action he was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.
