Pvt Alpheus E. Fowlkes Jr. enlisted at Fort McClellan, Alabama on 1 October 1942.Pvt Fowlkes participated in all four combat jumps of his unit: Sicily, Salerno, Normandy on D-day and the Netherlands.
He was killed during a German artillery barrage. He went out during the artillery attack to help 11 men who had been hit. During this act of bravery he himself was hit and killed by a small piece of shrapnel. For this action he was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.
He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands.
