More information
T/5 Duane D. Deakyne graduated from McClain High School with the class of 1942.He enlisted in Columbus, Ohio on 25 January 1943 and was sent overseas service in October 1944.
His wife received a letter written 6 June 1945 by Col. J.R. Jeter, commander of the 394th Infantry, explaining the circumstances of Cpl Deakyne's death. Col Jeter said the officers and men of the unit joined him in extending their sympathy to Mrs. Deakyne and a seven and a half months-old son, whom the father had never seen.
The infantry commander's letter disclosed Cpl Deakyne was killed in the vicinity of Elsenborn, Belgium. Battlefield service was held, with a chaplain of the Protestant faith officiating at the funeral, he said.
Col Jeter said Cpl Deakyne was defending his position from an enemy counter-attack when he was killed by fire from enemy mortars. His body was recovered after the ground was retaken from the Germans.
