Pvt John M. L. Baer enlisted in Allentown, Pennsylvania on 1 April 1943.

He was killed due to a fatal wound at the right side of his chest. He was killed when he went off with his jeep to pick up a trailer at the dropzone.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Molenhoek, the Netherlands on 22 October 1944. He was disinterred on 24 June 1948 and transported to Margraten were his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on 25 June 1948. He was given his final resting place on 31 January 1949.

His name is mentioned on his parents headstone at Saint Luke's Cemetery, Shoemakersville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
