Robert D. Lehan attended high school for one year and worked as a mechanic or repairman.

He volunteered for Army of the United States in Boston, Massachusetts on 18 March 1942.
Excerpt from the After Action Report of the 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion: 1st Platoon of C Company whose mission was to establish road blocks at Rochefort, Tellin and Wavreville took a roundabout route to the west and then headed south for Rochefort. Approximately six miles north of the town one destroyer slid off the road and turned completely over killing the asst gunner, Pvt Robert D. Lehan.

According to the After Action Report, this incident took place one day earlier than what is recorded as the official day of Robert Lehan's death.
