S/Sgt Karl B. Johnson was taken prisoner of war on 11 July 1943 in the vicinity of Gela, Sicily.

He was a prisoner of war at Stalag III-B in Furstenberg. The prisoners of this camp were marched to Stalag V-II and during this march, he was shot by a guard. Stopping for a moment to adjust his kitbag, the SS sentry shouted to him and as he did not hurry enough, he was shot through the head.
