Pvt John Humenik was employed at the Norfolk Navy shipyard before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Richmond, Virginia on 9 May 1942.He was married to Frances Longnecker on 26 April 1941.
His parents were born in Czechoslovakia and emigrated the the United States in 1907.
Pvt Humenik was already overseas for two years and had participated in the campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, France and The Netherlands.
