Pvt Joseph A. Battaglia attended high school for 1 year and was an janitor before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Albany, New York on 12 December 1942.

He was wounded in action on 30 December 1944 in the vicinity of Werbomont, Belgium and died on 7 January 1945 as a result of a gun shot wound in the abdomen.

Although identification schouldn't have been a problem, he was interred at Henri-Chapelle as Unknown X-301 on 10 January 1945. Before he was buried, his fingerprints were taken which resulted in an identification on 27 March 1945.
