2nd Lt Lloyd C. Mahurin volunteered for the Air Corps of the U.S. Army at Camp Crowder, Neosho, Missouri on 2 April 1942.He attended the Webb City High School in Webb City, Missouri.
His plane got lost over a flight between Belfast, Ireland and St. Mawgan Cornwall, England. It was shot down by two FW-190's of the 2nd Von Richthoven Geschwader, and crashed, burning in a field. 4 crew members where killed, only the crew chief survived.
The killed crew members where buried in Pleuven. About 1500 residents of the town where present at the funeral. With the help of two young girls (Jeanne Morvan and Marie Cariou), the crew chief, Cecil Bell, was brought to a local resistance member (Joseph Salaun). He could get back to England with the help of the French Resistance. Cecil Bell wrote a book off his memoires: My Old Flight Jacket and is still alive today (june 2016).
There is a rememberance plate on the “Route de St. Thomas “ in Pleuven, France.
